Since the inception of social media the world has seen a surge in online networking. Today everything is seen moving towards or driven by social media. The business owners are fast adopting new-social-media strategies discounting the old-fashioned techniques to make their target audience engagement more effective. The social media has taken the world of journalism and development by storm and especially the way we consume content today. Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat, LinkedIn, google plus and Pinterest are now an integral part of every individual and organisations business portfolio existing in public domain.

India, itself, is having an interesting trend with social media. Most reports suggest that accessing social media is one of the key reasons for majority of Indian population to access the internet. The phenomenon even holds true for entire South Asian countries. This speaks volumes about the power social media platforms exercises especially on today’s youth. If, on the one hand, social media is revolutionizing the world for good by informing, empowering and inspiring, on the other hand, trolling, information leaks, fake news and confidentiality threats are also lurking in every corner as internet becomes more social.

After internet immunity, the world now seeks more avenues and expects optimum utilization of resources from the different social media vehicles. With constant media innovations happening on daily basis there is a need for an association of strong social media managers, strategist, experts and professionals to evaluate, analyze, review and monitor the current social media and internet practices.
Association of Social Media Professionals (ASMP) is about connecting and collaborating. The forum will cater to the growing demands for shared knowledge and best practices around the globe and this shared intent forms the genesis of ASMP. The association will be a club of Indian and international pioneers, innovators and experts of social media industry, coming together for providing and sharing hands-on-training and experiences to digital professionals and enable them to shift from a passive consumers of internet to becoming the producers of online content.

4.     To Advocate balanced social media strategies, policies and initiatives at programme and policy level
5.     To Promote, support, contribute in result oriented primary and secondary research and analysis in social media applications and usage in above areas
6.     To Provide support and strengthen social media strategies and framework of institutions, organisations and public and private agencies towards optimal utilisation of social media resources for welfare and development causes
7. To Work towards value added publications and documentations in social media activities that have relevance in promoting social integration, economic development, national growth and healthy democratic and responsible information and communication ecosystem.


The Association of Social Media Professionals (ASMP) is an initiative of Association For Community Research and Action (ACRA), legally registered as a society under Societies Registration Act, 1860 of India. It is registered in New Delhi in 2009.

The main objective of the association is to bring the likeminded online community outside the virtual setting and give them an opportunity to meet offline and interact with each other to share insights to the social topics and trends engulfing the online world order. This will be one of a kind platform with groundbreaking speakers, professionals and key-note speakers sharing and discussing the year’s very best social media, public relations, advertising and marketing strategies around social media tools. The digital innovators will also be invited to showcase their cutting-edge technology and demonstrate how it can shape the future practices.

a.     Secondary- As social media taken on an increasingly important role in business and development world the following will be the deliverables from the association for its stakeholders.

a. Policy advocacy- The grassroots level and other social organisations especially in Indian context has still not been able to fully utilize the potential of social media advocacy. The social media is an effective tool to communicate to the government and similar bodies and impact their strategies and policies framework. The association will work on a matrix to leverage social media to extract higher returns out of advocacy investment by advocacy organisations.
b. Best Practices- The open forum will give a window opportunity to budding digital practitioners to learn from the best social media experts of the world and also share their success stories and experiences.

c. Democratic Deliberation- The expert panel of association will consult with subject experts regularly to come up with recommendations in context of online discourse to use social platforms as catalyst for online, political and social deliberations and quality checks to assess its effectiveness.

d. Exchange of opinion in promoting healthy social media- Social media has always been accused of being biased than the traditional media. The forum will work to put efforts for incorporating more filters for authenticity and fact checking and ensuring that social media is seen as credible source of consuming information. The idea is to design a manuscript which acts as a compass to navigate potential of social media in community building process including economic, human and environmental indicators.  
Stakeholders- The online community- entrepreneurs, business owners, fundraisers, managers, influencers and strategic decision makers- interested in social networking and media innovations is a stakeholder and will add value to this initiative. The social media usage has increased in past several years with non-profits, trade associations, labour unions and civic groups and government offices in putting their work interest forward using technology. With the advent of affordable apps and improving internet connectivity the usage of social media is bound to witness multiplier effect. This will also reflect upswing in social media usage. Facebook is testing a new feature to let users share events that they are interesting in attending to, on their "Stories" so that they can coordinate with friends and enjoy events together.

According to a TechCrunch report, the test will involve a new option to "Share to Your Story" that appears when you visit an event's page on Facebook.

Sudan Restricts Social Media Access to Counter Protest Movement

Since last year Internet freedom in Sudan declined due to a crippling economic crisis that made access to ICTs prohibitively expensive for everyday users. The government also exerted increasing control over the online sphere by arresting online journalists and activists and introducing new restrictive laws and also blocking access to social media used to organise nationwide anti-government protests triggered by an economic crisis.

Sudan has been rocked by near-daily demonstrations in the past over two weeks.

In a Northeast African country where the state controls traditional media, the internet has become an important information battleground. Of Sudan’s 40 million people, about 13 million use the internet and more than 28 million own mobile phones.

Largest Spike in Hate Crimes Since 9/11, Says a Report

The number of hate crimes reported in the United States jumped by 17% last year, the largest increase since 2001 when the terrorist hijackings on 9/11 fueled a surge in attacks on Americans of Muslim and Arab ancestry.

A total of 7,175 hate crime incidents were reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program in 2017, up from 6,121 in 2016, said the UCR Program's annual Hate Crime Statistics report, Xinhua reported.

It's the third year in a row the FBI has reported an increase in hate crimes. The number of hate crimes in 2016 rose about five percent from 2015.

The 2017 incidents encompass 8,437 total offences, meaning some involved multiple criminal charges.

According to the report, the most common bias categories in single-bias incidents were race/ethnicity/ancestry (59.6 percent), religion (20.6 percent), and sexual orientation (15.8 percent).
